Is cracking your joints harmful?

The sound of your joints cracking can often be worrying, but that does not mean it is causing you physical harm. There are situations where it may be a warning sign, but in the majority of cases, it is perfectly natural.

What is joint cracking?

Crepitus is the word for the sound the joints make when they crack or pop. The possible cause or causes have been a subject of research and debate for many years, but one of the most widely accepted theories involves cavitation. This is when the joint capsule, which consists of synovial fluid and a surrounding membrane, experiences a change of pressure, often because it has been stretched outside of its normal movement. An example is in a chiropractic session. Bubbles of gas, whether nitrogen, carbon dioxide or oxygen, develop in the fluid. When these bubbles collapse, it causes the cracking sound. It will then be about 20 minutes before you can crack the joint again as the gas needs time to fully dissolve.

Does joint cracking cause arthritis?

There is a popular myth that frequent joint cracking may increase your risk of developing arthritis, but scientific research does not support this. Injury or misuse of the joints may increase your arthritis risk, but joint cracking is a natural process that does not generally impact your blood flow or surrounding tissue. After the cavitation, the joint returns to normal and is unlikely to experience any lasting damage. Osteoarthritis is much more likely to be caused by a mixture of age and regular wear and tear, whilst rheumatoid arthritis is associated with inflammation and autoimmune issues. Genetics are also a relevant factor.

When is joint cracking a cause for worry?

Joint cracking is not generally harmful. If cracking your joints causes inflammation, swelling and pain, it may be an indicator of a more serious problem. A chiropractor Tewkesbury, such as Purelands Chiro, may be able to advise you, or in more serious cases, you may need to visit your doctor.

For most people, joint cracking continues to be a natural and harmless process.
