Mental health affects our ability to think, feel, and act. It encompasses our emotional and psychological well-being, as well as our ability to handle stress.
Mental health emergencies require immediate action, as the safety of a person is at stake. Warning signs may include hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, or extreme changes in behaviour.
Mental Health Emergencies
The free, NHS, 111 service now includes a dedicated mental health option. Staff can advise on where you can seek help urgently or immediately. You are also able to access immediate help from a fully trained mental health professional over the phone.
Your GP can also signpost you to the appropriate mental health services, such as talk therapies, and make the necessary referrals on your behalf.
There are also a range of volunteer-led organisations who can support you in times of mental health crisis. The Shout crisis text line is available by texting SHOUT to 85258. As well as the Samaritans, who are available via the number 116 123.
Trauma Informed Practice Training
For those in mental health crisis, a supportive environment with enhanced quality of care is essential to meet their needs.
Specialist course providers deliver a range of material on trauma informed practice training.
By ensuring that staff who regularly work with people in a health and care capacity have access to the right training and development, you can ensure that the best patient care is delivered. Those who have undergone training can respond to people sensitively, whilst demonstrating an understanding of their needs.
