America faces roofing industry woes

It’s been a time of significant change in the United States these past few months: with President Trump commencing his second term as leader and major changes to tariffs on products entering the USA, there are not many industries which are unaffected by this shift in economic policy.

A direct impact on roofing costs

Roofing is no exception. Changes have been made to tariffs on aluminium and steel, according to Sky News. These changes have pushed the price of essential roofing equipment to an all-time high, as roofers in Havant and the rest of the UK are also experiencing. Add to that the associated delays to these products, and the average price of re-roofing an average home has risen by almost $10,000.

A reduced workforce

There have also been considerable changes to immigration in the United States since the beginning of Trump’s second term. With over one quarter of construction workers originating from a country outside of the USA, it’s no wonder that 2025 has seen quite a sizable shortfall in the availability of junior construction workers.

Impact on consumers

Of course, the increased costs associated with Trump’s tariffs and having to employ higher-paid workers have to be absorbed somewhere. Roofing companies still need to pay staff and make ends meet, so it makes sense that this cost is passed on to the consumer. However, increased costs often signal reduced demand – people may simply make do with what they already have or put re-roofing off for another day.

However, this may be a false economy, because leaving a leaky roof or ignoring broken tiles can cause greater problems further down the line. If you feel any aspect of your house’s roof is suffering from wear and tear, consider expert roofers Havant.

Unfortunately, the forecast doesn’t look particularly bright either. With no end to the rise in tariffs in sight, nor a relaxation of immigration laws, it would seem the construction industry as a whole is displaying an abundance of caution when it comes to beginning new projects or making investments.
